Saudi Arabia Frees Covid-19 Vaccine to Everyone in the Kingdom

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health said a vaccine against the new coronavirus ( COVID-19 ) would be freely available to everyone living in the Kingdom.

"The COVID-19 vaccine will be available to everyone in Saudi Arabia free of charge ... We hope to have enough vaccines to cover 70 percent of the country's population by the end of 2021," said a Health Ministry statement carried by state television station Al-Ekhbariya TV.

Health Ministry spokesman Mohammed Abdelali said in a daily coronavirus press conference, as quoted in Arabiya English, Tuesday (24/11/2020), said; "Every vaccine must be safe, effective, and approved by the relevant authorities."

To date Saudi Arabia has reported 355,489 confirmed cases of COVID-19 infection, 343,816 patients recovered, and 5,796 deaths.

The race to produce a vaccine to fight COVID-19 has produced several leading vaccine candidates.

Pfizer and Moderna announced earlier this month potent COVID-19 vaccine candidates, each with an efficacy rate of more than 90 percent.

Russia also announced on November 9 that the COVID-19 vaccine, named Sputnik V, is more than 90 percent effective.

AstraZeneca announced on Monday that its vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford, is 90 percent effective in preventing COVID-19.

The leaders of the world's 20 largest economies or the G-20 committed at the end of the G-20 summit in Riyadh on Sunday to "endeavor" to ensure fair distribution of the anti-coronavirus vaccine around the world.

After the virtual summit organized by Saudi Arabia, the G-20 leaders said in the last communique; "We have mobilized resources to address immediate financing needs in global health to support safe and effective research, development, manufacture, and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, therapies, and diagnostics."
