World Power Increasing, the UN is Dwarfing
Vijay Nambiar, a retired Indian diplomat who served at the United Nations, said there was an increasing threat that countries were withdrawing from multinationalism. He said it was because of the arrogance of many great world powers.
He stressed that it was time for the United Nations to reform and review its basic structure before it was too late. Nambiar said there was evidence that countries were moving to find solutions to their problems, approaching other regional and international organizations.
Due to the failure of the United Nations, as many as 34 regional and international groupings have emerged in the world, outside of world bodies ranging from the European Union (EU) to the G7, G20, NATO, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Association of South-East Asian Nations and others. Also, there are the Nuclear Security Group, the Missile Technology Control Regime, the Australian Group, and the Wassenaar Arrangement
Regarding reform of the UN system, Syed Akbaruddin, another retired diplomat, said that the only conflict has the potential to change the world order. In the past, he said, the world order changed in 1945, after World War II, in 1814-15 because of the Congress of Vienna, which reorganized Europe after the Napoleonic Wars. And in 1648, the Treaty of Westphalia, which ended the years of war between Spain and the Netherlands.
Meanwhile, the former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon said, the increasing unilateralism in the world, caused by big powers, made not only the UN but also small countries in trouble.
